Viton™ Fluoroelastomers for Dynamic Seals

Customizing Dynamic Seal Performance to Match Industry Needs

Dynamic seals create a barrier between moving and stationary surfaces in rotary or linear applications, such as rotating or oscillating shafts and reciprocating pistons. They contain pressure, retain or separate fluids, and keep out contaminants. Widely used across all industries, they perform a range of different functions, including:

  • Hydraulic or pneumatic seals
  • Oil or grease seals
  • Exclusion seals that clean the surface of a retracting rod, removing dirt or water
  • Bearing isolators that keep contaminants out and lubricants in
  • Labyrinth and clearance seals that protect machine elements from contamination through a non-contact method

How Viton™ Fluoroelastomers Help

Viton™ fluoroelastomers let designers match a part’s characteristics to the application, environment, and performance requirements for which it will be used. Different grades of Viton™ fluoroelastomers can impart critical properties to dynamic seals, including:

  • Resistance to wear, water, heat, and chemicals
  • Elasticity so seal returns to original shape after compression
  • Permeation resistance to prevent liquids or gases passing through the seal
  • Resiliency so a seal remains elastic when exposed to stresses
  • Meets military standards (MIL-SPEC) and aerospace material specifications (AMS)
